How to Help if the Ceremony is in Your Home Town

There’s nothing like stepping back into the world you grew up in. Especially if time and tides have taken you away as you’ve become an adult. That intrinsic connection is the reason that many brides and grooms choose to come back to their home town to say their vows.

If geography presents a challenge to the newlyweds to be, here’s how Mum can step in and help out!

Scout out wedding venues. I’ve found that choosing a wedding venue “back home” is either incredibly simple, or incredibly complicated. There’s either a spot that’s deeply meaningful where they KNOW they want the ceremony to be, or everything is off the list because their memories of the place are either bad or blasé. Mum, this is where you can be a lifesaver, especially if you still live in the area. If the kids are in need of options, you’re in a perfect position to find them, and pass plenty of pictures along so when they make the trip in to make a final decision, they have a few places in mind.

Be the go-between. I will never forget trying to arrange a friend’s bridal luncheon from 400 miles away. There was no chance to go into town before the event. I spent hours upon hours on the phone with vendors trying to lock the details into place, and on the day of I still had to cross my fingers and hope the entire thing didn’t come crashing down around our ears. Having boots on the ground, as it were, will make life easier for everyone.

Be neutral. This can be the hard part, especially if you’ve been roped into acting as go-between, but at the end of the day you’re there to bring your child’s version of the perfect day to life. Remember their rooms when they were teenagers? Just because you hate it doesn’t mean that they will!

If you’re your child’s tie to the place they want to be married, a place that has many happy memories for you all, you’re in a wonderful position to be an active and vital part of their big day. Make sure you make time in between cake tasting and picture taking to find the perfect ensemble for yourself. We can’t wait to see you here at No. 25 of Bourne End!
